The Gift Hidden in the Shadow
We are taught to chase the light. To pursue healing, rise above, become better. But what if the parts we’ve tried so hard to outrun aren’t broken pieces… but buried gifts? This piece is an intimate transmission from the other side of that chase. A love letter to the shadow, and to the truth that the path to wholeness may begin where we least expect it.

I used to believe I was broken.
That the ache inside me was proof
something had gone wrong.
I saw my shadows on the sidewalk in broad daylight
lurking in my reactions,
rising in my relationships,
shouting in my silence.
It looked like anger.
Like control.
Like collapsing just when things got good.
And I told myself,
This is what I must fix.
This is what I must heal.
This is what must go…
if I ever want to grow.
I chased the light
like it could save me.
I tried to “vibrate higher.”
I journaled, fasted, forgave, reprogrammed,
did all the things to be less…
shadowy.
But the shadow was clever.
She also came with the daylight.
Not a demon in the dark
but a mirror in the sun.
She showed up in the middle of my clarity,
mid-sentence in a post,
mid-prayer in the evening,
asking quietly,
“Do you see me yet?”
She wasn’t waiting to be banished.
She was waiting to be seen.
She wasn’t the villain.
She was the seed.
Buried in her
under the fear,
beneath the reactivity,
behind the shame
was a gift.
A forgotten dream.
A belief that had never been spoken.
A power I was too afraid to touch.
The more I tried to get rid of her,
the louder she became.
Until I stopped running.
And sat with her.
And that’s when she changed.
She wasn’t heavy anymore.
She was full.
Full of fuel.
Full of meaning.
Full of the exact frequency I needed
to crack open my next becoming.
She showed me that pain
isn’t proof that we’re off-track —
it’s the compass.
That our patterns aren’t punishments —
they are portals.
That our shadows
are not the absence of light,
but its consequence.
Proof we are being lit from within.
And now I walk with her.
She is not my shame.
She is my soil.
Not my failure
But my flowering.
And if you see her walking beside me,
and you’re tempted to look away —
don’t.
Because what you’re seeing
is my humanness.
My hunger.
My hope.
The part of me I once tried to hide
is the part that now leads me home.
She is the root of my gift,
the keeper of my dreams,
and the quiet guide
who walks me
to the fruit.
So if you see me out there walking,
Shadow stretching down the lane —
Don’t take her.
She’s my story.
She’s the gold inside my pain.
Reflection
What part of your shadow have you tried to hide, heal, or outrun? and what might happen if, instead, you sat with it… and listened?

Bold and Tender.
True and Wild.
Thank you for sharing your journey….
Big Love,
Jen
